Martin Luther King Jr. did a lot for our country in terms of equality and race relations in the 60’s with the Civil Rights Movement. If it were not for the path laid out by MLK and other key figures like Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and Huey Newton among others, we ma not be able to have friends of different races, go to the same restaurants or the same malls. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a national holiday into existence that would celebrate MLK’s legacy and his birthday at the same time—this year, that day takes place Monday January 17th. With several events happening around the Bay Area to celebrate his life, one that you should definitely visit is Monday Soul located at New Parish (579 18th Street) hosted by Mr. JE, Jareem, DNAs, DJ D Sharp and Fusicology.
Despite being a weekly event, this week the series will be having a MLK Celebration, as well as a Listening Part for R.O.D’s #TheDrawingBoardMixtape hosted by DJ Slowpoke. If you don’t have the mixtape you can download it here.
