As a self-proclaimed music stan (stalker fan), I’m always on the prowl for new music. With that being said, I was excited when Bella asked me to check out Sol Infinite’s Within, Destination.  Although this is the Jersey native’s debut solo project, Sol is featured on the Black Pawn produced album, A Breath of Fresh Air. His new release is definitely not one that can not be easily categorized, because of his unique flow over his self-produced beats.  Is it rap or is it Spoken word laced with beats and melodies? According to the artist it’s neither, but it could be left up to the listener to decide.  All I can say for sure is that it radiates the very essence of Hip Hop. This two-part project features 22 tracks backed by easy grooves that warrant the same head nods paired with  music by the Rapper, Blu.  Even though this project took only five months to evolve into the finished product, the production felt thorough and thoughtful. Two qualities that made the theme of the project easier to absorb mentally and aurally.  The theme is progression and recognizing one’s true potential to transcend difficult phases in life.

Noteworthy Tracks:

“Vignettes (Inspired by The Motion Picture of Everyday Life)”- This was my absolute favorite song from the entire project! I found it profoundly creative the Sol was able to entwine the dialogue of PBS’s “The Joy of Painting” host Bob Ross with is lyrics about the many shades of life. I loved the metaphor! The dialogue also helps the track beautifully progress.

“wordspastthemargin”- “complex and rhyme style glorious” indeed.  This track serves as proof, that Sol is serving up something totally different than we are used to. The riff featured in the opening of the track gave the track an old school feel, I feel kind of exposed an ‘old soul air’ about Sol and his craft.

“The Promo”- Sol establishes himself and his work as real. This short song packs a mighty punch. Describing what sets him apart from his peers and he proclaims his allegiance to deep thinkers. He promotes his work as something that came from a thoughtful place (his soul), and I think that brought a realness to the whole entire project. Despite the fact that many other artists claim same, I actually felt it from Sol. The only thing I don’t understand it, why it appeared as the seventh track on Side A and not as first track to announce his debut as an artist.

Final Thoughts: The project is something I can definitely ponder. The entire project serves as a vessel for delivering strong messages about life and the soul searching that is necessary to transcend to the different phases we face in life.
