In the times we are living in today, people are constantly trying to awaken the dead shown with the 2Pac hologram at Coachella, this odd guy walking around as if he were 2Pac at Paid Dues last year, or with Drake’s latest Aaliyah return with “Enough Said.”
I wouldn’t say that I necessarily have an issue with these artists coming around again (don’t know how to say that) as they were legends in my generation, but it’s a little eerie and not necessary to me.
Which leads to my opinion of “Enough Said.” I read that people were crying over this song… Erin shed no tears. It was nice to hear Aaliyah on a track, as she was one of my favorite artists growing up. I remember my mom playing her on Saturday mornings while she was vacuuming and I was playing Barbie’s waiting for Dance Party and Soul Train to come on. She was one of those artists who died before their time to really blossom kind of like Tami Terrell (not comparing the two, but get what I am saying) so maybe Drake’s attempt at this song and rumored album is to give her the life on tracks that she didn’t get.
The song is okay. I really dig the 40 productions—I really always like 40’s production style actually. The atmospheric production palette really compliments Aaliyah’s never heard before vocals. Drake’s verse is cool, however it doesn’t flow with the rest of the song at all. She’s singing about essentially relationship issues, and he’s talking about a whole bunch of other stuff—how he went from his “nigga serving it by the tele to venues in Manchester just swerving with Balotelli,” and what the fuck are you trying to tell him? He also says things like how “girls that become ladies, and my friends having babies, and babies are dropping dead in my city, this shit is crazy.” I guess since he is the first rapper to successfully sing on tracks, he gets a pass (sarcasm). I don’t quite think there needs to be a whole Aaliyah album of unheard tracks though, in my opinion, but I’m quite sure I’d listen to it if it came out. Also, if 40 produced the project and perhaps got some help from Timbaland and Missy (rumored online) then it’d have some pretty cool production.
With that being said, I don’t dislike the song based on my opinions.
